Critical Care

Critical Care is a specialty that encompasses may other specialties within it because it generally treats patients with major accidents, life-threatening illnesses, acute infections, complications from surgery, etc.  Critical Care Specialists are specially trained to take care of such acutely ill patients. Critical care is usually provided in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting. Intensive care has been defined as “a service for patients with potentially recoverable conditions who can benefit with more detailed observation and invasive treatment. Patients in critical care receive continuous monitoring both by various medical equipment as well as by a team of doctor, nurses and assistants. It is usually reserved for patients with potential or established organ failure. The most commonly supported organ is the lung, but facilities should also exist for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of other organ dysfunction.
